RiverCare river cleanup

The club was recently introduced by Colchester Canoe Club to Robert Martyr of RiverCare. RiverCare work with communities that live near to rivers in East Anglia to help them look after and care for their rivers.

As kayakers and canoeists we see both the good and bad on the river. There is beautiful scenery and wildlife but and also litter and pollution.

With RiverCare's help we organised a one day clean up of some sections of riverbank; some of which which could only be reached from the water. There was a great turn out, with over 15 people, including some students from the University of Essex.

We had a surprisingly enjoyable day collecting litter. In doing so we ventured out onto bits of the riverbank that we would unlikely to have visited otherwise.

The club now has a RiverCare coordinator and we will be working with RiverCare on further projects in the future.

A paddle to White House beach

We had another great visit to White House beach today. A group of club members met up with members of Wivenhoe Sailing Club and the Wivgigs gig rowing club and paddled/sail/motored/rowed from Wivenhoe down the River Colne to White House beach near Alresford Creek.

People took along, tea/coffee, cakes and in some cases some quite lavish spreads. Some took a chance to try out other people's boats and there was much mingling and chatting.

The weather was amazingly good for an early October day and the turnout was great, with around 50-60 people being on the beach at one point.
